Dumbfounded

I realize that it's not nice to make fun of people...but I don't really care that much - some stories are too good to keep to oneself :-) While in Lebanon, we went to the souk Trablous (Tripoli market) to do some shopping. I was in a giftshop waiting for my father and Judy who were in another shop when an American girl approached me and asked me if I could translate some Arabic for her. She was looking at some keychains with Arabic phrases written on them and wanted to know what they said. This is the conversation that followed - unedited, unchanged...I swear:

Stupid American Girl: What does this one say?
Nicholas: Twakalt-il-Allah - I put my fate in God's hands.
SAG: How about this one?
Nicholas: Bism-Allah il Raham il Rahim - In the name of God the beneficent the merciful. This is the opening line of the Quran.
SAG: Ok. What about this one over here?
Nicholas: (struggling for just a second to think of the proper translation)...this one says 'Grace be to God'
SAG: Oh - I want that one!
Nicholas: Ok - out of curiosity, why that one?
SAG: Because it says 'God' and not 'Allah' - I'm a Christian.

After standing there dumbfounded for a few seconds, refusing to believe people this stupid were allowed to walk the streets, I decided to try to explain:

Nicholas: Ok - Allah is the Arabic word for God - it doesn't refer specifically to any particular God - it's like saying 'Dieu' in French or 'Dios' in Spanish.
SAG: Ok - but if you say Allah to an American, they think Islam.
Nicholas: You realize that the one you picked out says Allah on it just like the others.
SAG: No - you said it says 'Grace be to God' - not 'Grace be to Allah.'

I briefly thought about beating her to death with her non-Allah keychain for the good of the gene pool, but I was wearing a nice shirt and didn't want to get any blood on it.
