What kind of weekend it has been...

Saturday, B and I went to Opening Doors – The Planned Parenthood Gala

The tickets were pricey, but the money went to a great cause. After dinner and a fabulous speaker, we toured the Mission Wish List table where we had the opportunity to donate the money necessary to provide certain services (e.g. birth control pills for a month, Emergency Contraception, security guard salary for a day, etc…). We also had the opportunity to see the design of the new facility.

Speaking of the new facility, this past week while escorting at Planned Parenthood, the director of the Houston Coalition for Life commented “thanks to us, your business is way down Nicholas.” I explained that I don’t actually work at the clinic, but guessed that she was referring to Planned Parenthood’s business. I then asked her to follow me to the corner where I pointed at a run-down brick building a few blocks away and explained how that was the building occupied by Planned Parenthood when it first opened in midtown Houston. They soon upgraded to the present location and have since had to expand the present facility to accommodate their clientele. In the spring of 2009, Planned Parenthood will be moving to a gorgeous new facility near U of Houston (see picture).

“So,” I explained – “business is so down that Planned Parenthood is soon expanding for the fourth time in a few decades. What’s more, at the new facility, you and your protestors won’t be able to get within a hundred feet of our clientele to harass them when they come to see their doctors. Out of curiosity, what are you going to do then?” I didn’t get a response, but if anyone has employment for which protesting and handing out factually incorrect literature is a prerequisite, I know of a few people who might be looking for jobs soon.

Finally, on Sunday morning, B and I joined Becca at Baby Yega’s for their fabulous brunch buffet and ate our weight in…well, just about everything. It was the perfect end to a great weekend.
